Senior School News

Last week seven of our Year 12 boys were finalising their Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation.  Pauro, Lyric, Titan, James, Bayleh, Alex and Nathan have been working on this course for a day per week during Term 2.

They completed a mixture of online and practical training including a three day camp.  Knowledge and skills gained focussed on the resources industry and included risk management, tagging and isolating, reading and interpreting maps and working safely at heights.

The course was delivered by the Australian Drilling Institute Pty Ltd who have complemented our boys on their conduct throughout.  We would like to thank the Ili, Karen and Cherie who have provided the boys with wonderful opportunities and support throughout the term.

Practice QCS Test next week
To finish off Term 2, all Year 12 students who are sitting the QCS test will participate in two days of practice testing following the exam block.  This is our final round of practice tests before the actual test in Term 3.  It is compulsory that all QCS students attend these tests because:
  • We run the practice under the exact same conditions as the actual QCS test which provides students with a really good insight into how much stamina is required over the two days.
  • It is our last chance to provide the students with some feedback about where they are doing well and areas where there is room for improvement.
I have set out below the dates and approximate times for the practice tests.  The second table outlines the equipment that all students will need for both the practice test and the actual QCS test.

Students who are not sitting the QCS test will attend normal classes on June 22 and 23.

Careers Showcase and QTAC Information Session
Wednesday 20 July
On Wednesday 20 July (second Wednesday of Term 3), all Year 12 students will be attending a Careers Showcase here at school.  Students will have the opportunity to hear from universities, TAFE, Defence Force Recruiting and representatives from various industries.  The showcase will be held during Periods 1 to 3.

Students who are going onto tertiary study will be required to stay back in Period 4 that day to attend an information session about how to apply for university etc through QTAC.  Information regarding this session will be emailed home soon.  Parents are more than welcome to attend this session also.

Civil Train Excursion
Wynnum State High School has partnered with Civil Constructors Federation to provide an
opportunity to explore real job skills for those students currently studying Cert I in Construction and Engineering. Recently Year 12 VEC students visited the Queensland Civil Industry Training Centre (QCTIC- Civil Train) located in Eight Mile Plains Technology Park, where they had the opportunity to investigate a wide range of career options within the construction industry.

The students experienced what operating plant (earthmoving machinery) is about on industry standard simulators and explored confined space and trench shoring facilities. This state-of-the-art training centre has been designed specifically for civil construction training and offered students the best insight into this industry.

Thanks to Les Hart as our host for the day at Civil Train, including the BBQ for lunch and importantly Wynnum High’s Work Placement Coordinator Tanya Moore for co-ordinating the day for staff and students.
