Senior-School-News - May/June

10/06/2015
News from the Senior School

Over the month of May/June the senior students have had many opportunities to gather information, skills and attend excursions to help with their decision making, subject knowledge and further study options.  A few of these are outlined below:

May 6
Events Management is being studied by Year 12 BCT students this semester so in order for them to have some real-life experiences they visited both Suncorp Stadium and the Hilton Brisbane.  At Suncorp students were given an informative tour of the stadium which included the function rooms, Channel 9’s media room and the variety of seating options that are available.

At the Hilton the students split into two groups with one starting at the basement and working their way to the top floor while the other group did the reverse, starting with the Executive Area and working their way down. This was followed by lunch in the Vintaged Grill Restaurant, yet another opportunity to see how a medium sized group is catered for.

May 12
The year 10 and 11 students attended their second Elevate Study Skills seminar.  These seminars provided both year levels with a variety of skills to help improve their study technique, time management and make exam preparation effective.

May 19
All year 12 students attended a Careers Showcase here at the school where they had the opportunity to listen to a variety of universities and Industry experts.  The day began with four universities giving an overview on what courses each had on offer, how university life is different to high school and provided information on scholarships and facilities.  The second part of the day gave the year 12 students an opportunity to listen to a variety of speakers talk about their industry.

Students heard from the defence forces, police, construction, theatre, teaching, fitness, fire services, IT and fitness industries. The speakers touched on things such as: the pre-requisites required to be successful, educational requirements, application processes and career opportunities.

The objective of such a day is to give students up to date information which will allow them to make informed decisions for their pathways after year 12.  We would like to thank all presenters who took time out of their busy schedules to speak with our students.

May 22
The Year 11 Tourism class spent a very pleasant afternoon down at the Wynnum foreshore, all in the name of education!  The students are currently completing a competency called “Provide visitor information” which requires them to be able to provide information to visitors on their local area.  The class are now well versed in the story of the Quandamooka Totem Poles, the Indigenous history of our area and the wonderful facilities we have right on our doorstep for visitors.

May 28
Those year 12 students sitting the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test spent the day listening to experts and working through strategies needed to be successful in this fast approaching test.

June 5
Eight year 11 Biology students will travel to the Port of Brisbane to attend an Environmental Forum as part of World Environment Day.   This presentation will touch on subjects such as: air and water monitoring, shore bird migration, seagrass, solar power, mangroves and the steps that the Port of Brisbane is taking to protect these environments.

End of Semester Exams
Year 11 - Monday 22 June through to Friday 26 June
Year 12 - Wednesday 17 June through to Tuesday 23 June

Mr Wilson is currently organising the Year 11 and 12 Exam Block for the end of Semester 1. Students will receive a copy of the timetable as soon as this is finalised.  Year 11 and 12 students are reminded that they are only to attend school when they have an exam on and that the full school uniform is to be worn.

QCS
The students sitting the QCS test in September will be completing a second practice test on Wednesday 24 June and Thursday 25 June.  This practice session is compulsory and will follow the same format as the actual QCS Test so it is a really worthwhile experience for the students.  Additional information will be given to students during their QCS lesson next week.
