Senior School News - May

25/05/2016
News from the Senior School

In the last four weeks, senior students have once again been busy with various activities, excursions  and incursions.  Below is a little taste of the previous month for our seniors.

Year 12 BCT Excursion
Events Management is being studied by Year 12 BCT students this semester so in order for them to have some real-life experiences they visited both Suncorp Stadium and the Hilton Brisbane.

At Suncorp students were given an informative tour of the stadium which included the function rooms, Channel 9’s media room and the variety of seating options that are available.

At the Hilton the students split into two groups with one starting at the basement and working their way to the top floor while the other group did the reverse, starting with the Executive Area and working their way down. This was followed by lunch in the Vintaged Grill Restaurant, yet another opportunity to see how a medium sized group is catered for.

Year 10 BST Excursion
The two Year 10 BST classes visited the Police Museum and Boggo Road Gaol as a part of their Law unit. The Police Museum is an excellent opportunity to see and learn about procedures, techniques and issues facing Queensland police officers in their everyday duties.  It is also a great opportunity for students to use their talents, have some fun and solve a simulated murder!  The second venue, Boggo Road Gaol, provided an invaluable lesson about crime and punishment, law and order, and justice in different eras.

Rotary Dinner for our RYPEN Campers
Last Wednesday evening Kim Hutchinson and I had the pleasure of attending the Wynnum and Manly Rotary Club’s monthly dinner.  The main attraction of the evening was  the presentations given by students from local schools who had attended the RYPEN camp recently.  As you will have seen in last month’s Wire, we had three students attend the camp, but the two who were sponsored by the Wynnum and Manly Club were Kai Bowen and Gavith De Silva.

Kai and Gavin each delivered a speech in front of the club’s members, invited guests and their parents.  They were articulate and genuine in their words and they certainly did Wynnum State High School proud.  Well done Kai and Gavith.

Elevate Education
The Year 10 and 11 students attended their second Elevate Study Skills seminar recently and we also hosted a parent session to help parents with tips to help their students at home with study.  The parent session also provided some psychology behind study, learning and memory and proved to be very interesting.

QCS Seminar Day
Those Year 12 students sitting the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) test spent the day listening to experts and working through strategies needed to be successful for this fast approaching test.  While the students may not be able to see their progress in QCS strategies at the moment, from the QCS teachers’ points of view, we can definitely see how far they have travelled since the beginning of the year.  The students will sit their second and final practice test at the end of this term, following block exams.  Further information about this will be sent home closer to the time.

Information on How to apply to University
Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) will send their 2016 guides to us in mid June.  Soon after they arrive, Rob Inglis (Guidance Officer) will hold an information session for all Year 12 students who are considering applying for further study.  The session will cover how to apply, due dates, application fees and some useful strategies for ordering preferences.  Rob will also then work individually with students who need assistance in applying to QTAC.  The first due date for applications is 30 September, after which application fees increase by about $70 (so it is a good idea to meet that first deadline!)  If you require any information before the information session, please feel free to contact Rob Inglis or Marina Williams.
