Junior Secondary

Years 7, 8 and 9 make up the three years of Junior Secondary education at Wynnum High.  Our vision for Junior Secondary education is to nurture students who:

  • are creative, literate, numerate and connected
  • can establish and maintain meaningful relationships within a positive and warm learning environment
  • demonstrate mutual respect and personal accountability
  • are motivated and high achieving learners who engage actively in a rigorous, relevant curriculum
  •

In Year 7, students will study English and Mathematics as ‘core’ subjects. English is studied for 280 minutes per week and Mathematics for 280 minutes per week.  Science and Health and Physical Education (HPE) will be studied for 140 minutes and History and Languages Other than English (LOTE – Japanese or French) will be studied for 140 minutes per week.  Technology and Creative Arts will be studied for 140 minutes per week for one semester each.

In Year 8, all ‘core’ subjects - English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities are studied for 210 minutes per week each.  HPE and French or Japanese is studied for 140 minutes per week and Technology and Creative Arts are also studied for 140 minutes per week for one semester each.  Year 8 students will choose a different context in both Creative Arts and Technology from the one they studied in Year 7.

In Year 9, students continue to study all ‘core’ subjects - English, Mathematics, Science and Humanities for 210 minutes per week.  Health and Physical Education (HPE) is studied for 140 minutes per week and Technology and Creative Arts are studied for 140 minutes for the whole year with students choosing one context from each area.  Year 9 students wishing to study French or Japanese however, do not study a Technology context.

Year 7 and 8 classes will have the same teacher for their English and Humanities subjects and the same teacher for their Mathematics and Science subjects.  They will remain in the same class for both Year 7 and Year 8.  In Year 9 classes, classes will change.

All students in Junior Secondary school will also participate in pastoral care and sport each week.
