On 3rd and 9th May the Year 12 students who study Cert I in Construction and Cert I in
Engineering had the opportunity to participate in a one-day introduction class to Bricklaying, run by the Clay Brick and Paver Association of Queensland. Instructor Brian was able to give the students valuable insight into this industry as well as complete hands-on experience.
Students started the day by mixing up the mortar (mud), learning the correct consistency and components needed. On completion of this task they were shown how to roll the mud and how to place it on the trowel. The instructor completed this task with such ease many were thinking how hard could it be? It took the students a while to get the right hand motions, and then they were away. They then set about laying their foundations in support of the two-course wall. Students had many opportunities to lay a number of two-course walls, check their levels, butterings and finishing off corners throughout the day.
At the end of the two days Brian was impressed with how hard the boys had worked mentioning that Mitchell and Josh Williams, Callum Jansen, Jasper Fahey and Fred Collett had stood out among their peers. Brian was also approached by a number of students keen to follow through with more information or possible work experience in this field. The course was a wonderful success for all students who participated who now have gained a variety of new skills and experiences.
