Creative Arts - August

Queensland Youth Orchestras (QYO) runs a schools outreach program each year with the support of program sponsor, Energex.

Wynnum SHS was the lucky school selected by QYO to participate in the program in 2015. The Symphonic Band plus six augmenting QYO musicians will perform in one of QYO’s Concerts at Twilight on Sunday 13 September at 4pm at the Old Museum Concert Hall at Bowen Hills. The Symphonic Band will perform alongside members of the QYO Wind Ensemble (concert band) conducted by David Law or the QYO Junior String Ensemble conducted by Chen Yang. The school also receives a professionally recorded CD of the concert. We would like to thank QYO for selecting Wynnum SHS us to be part of this great initiative.

Thanks to Ms Ioannou, Wynnum SHS has won thirty five tickets to see the world renowned indigenous dance theatre troupe Bangarra’s production of Lore at QPAC on Saturday 15 August. The Courier Mail is the sponsor of this wonderful opportunity providing free tickets and transport to the performance. We look forward to hearing all about the experience.
At the end of last semester Years 7 – 12 Creative Arts students and Years 7 – 9 Technology students presented Showcase.  Junior and Senior Showcases are a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to come and see what the students had achieved in Semester 1 and celebrate their successes. Thank you to all the students who presented their work and to the great turn-out of teachers, parents and friends who came along to support.

Tamia Wade, Nathaniel Laurel and Naomi Taylor participated in the Queensland Conservatorium of Music Popular Music Day at the Gold Coast. They had the experience of recording in a professional studio and meeting students from Griffith who are currently enrolled in the Popular Music course. They received a professional recording of their performances for their portfolio.
Congratulations go to Zoe Nehring and Kira Medlock who have been accepted into the Queensland Conservatorium of Music’s State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP). This state-wide program gives instrumental music students an opportunity to experience ensemble playing at an advanced level. Students not only meet other like-minded students from throughout the state, they also have an opportunity to work with interstate and international conductors and tutors. Well done Zoe and Kira.
Stage Band players and their families attended a performance by the Brisbane Contemporary Jazz Orchestra featuring Ingrid James on vocals with the Cleveland District High school’s senior jazz ensemble, Decemsextet and jazz orchestra. It was a wonderful night of stimulating and inspiring music making from some of Brisbane’s best jazz musicians. Thanks to Mrs Anderson for organising this outing.
Wynnum SHS is hosting an area Beginner’s Camp for students from Manly SS, Manly West SS and Tingalpa SS from 5 – 7 August. Over 100 young beginner players from these schools will participate in workshops, rehearsals and instrumental tutorials over the three days of the camp. These camps provide students with an invaluable musical experience and we would like to thank Mr Rander who has organised this camp for the Primary schools in the area.
Great news for Tahlia Hedges who has been accepted into this year’s Southside Workshop of Excellence from 13 - 14 August. Tahlia is one of fifty students selected to participate in this program. Well done Tahlia!
Mr Phil Ryan was guest conductor for the day at a Stage Band rehearsal on Tuesday 28 July. He put the band through their paces and they learnt many new skills and techniques of playing in a Jazz ensemble.
