Write A Book In A Day

On Tuesday 9th August, Junior Excellence students participated in the Kids’ Cancer Project event: Write a Book in a Day – or WABIAD – as we have called it. This enormous and challenging day sees junior excellence students work in groups to create an illustrated book that is 3500 – 5000 words in length. At the beginning of the day, WABIAD delivers each group their parameters and students have 12 hours to produce their text. Students need creativity, commitment, focus and teamwork – and a lot of lollies, apparently – to meet the target!

We took over the library and students set to work. Some of their choices presented real challenge: how do you create a non-human character that is a beachball? Or a cockroach? They were really forced to flex their amazing creativity and writing skills to meet this challenge.

Best of all, the entry fee and any further sponsorship goes to funding research into cancer. A big thank you must go to parents and community members who have sponsored the books for some groups. To date, extra sponsorship has raised $2500 for the organisation, and seven of the books are up for judging and prizes. The books themselves are distributed to hospitals and shared with patients in Kids’ cancer wards. This is a really worthwhile event.

Congratulations to all students who participated in this event; your efforts were amazing, and the books you have created are wonderful! The books will be held in the library after they have been printed.

WABIAD 2022: 12 hours; 21 teams; 21 books; 75 000+ words; $4000+ for Cancer research

Congratulations to WABIAD participants!
