2025 Academic Extension Class

Wynnum State High School offers an academic extension class in Years 7, 8 and 9.  This selective class offers extension and enrichment through the Australian Curriculum in core subject areas (English, Humanities, Mathematics and Science) for academically gifted and talented students, allowing students to develop their academic talent in a collegiate atmosphere and develop leadership skills, personal confidence, and resilience.

The curriculum class is designed with careful consideration to a level of abstraction and complexity appropriate to the needs of high achieving learners who thrive on being extended.  These curriculum provisions include:

  • an accelerated pace with fewer repetitions, whilst still providing clear instruction and scaffolding.
  • adjusted tasks to allow students to process more complex and abstract information and encourage higher order thinking skills.
  • opportunities to engage in learning with students with similar academic goals and shared interests, with the aim of developing collaborative skills in problem-solving, critical and creative thinking, and self-reflection.
Special projects and participation in extension activities such as university visits, programs through local industry partners, Young Writer workshops, and entry to STEM competitions aim to challenge and extend student learning and expose students to real life opportunities.

Application for entry to the academic extension class is completed when students are in Year 6 through an application included in enrolment packs.  Selection for the class is determined through an analysis of the following:
  • Your child’s AGAT (Acer General Ability Test) score. Details of testing on application page. Families will be emailed exact details after applications have closed
  • Your child’s two most recent semester report cards demonstrating a high level of academic achievement, behaviour and effort
  • Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN reports
  • Any other supporting documentation such as ICAS or PAT test reports.
Application forms are to be submitted to the school office by Friday 6 September, 2024.

If you have any queries about the academic extension class, contact our Head of Department Junior School, Mr Josh Gaffel on 3906 7333 or jgaff24@eq.edu.au.
