Year 7 – 8 students in 2024 at Wynnum State High School are required to supply an iPad as standard school equipment through a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Program. The iPad will serve as the core learning device.

The iPad has varied functionality and our goal is for students to use iPads as a tool to support key processes in learning. Students will be collaborating, creating, communicating, accessing, processing and using them to facilitate deeper engagement and the use of higher-order thinking. The iPad will allow students to consume and produce information in a mobile form through:

  • Textbooks available on the iPad meaning up to date resources are always available.
  • All classwork available through QLearn.
  • A growing range of classroom apps and tools will continue to be released as we move forward.

Technical support

Wynnum State High School runs an IT help desk that offers level one support for student owned devices. However, warranty, security, insurance and maintenance will be something the parent will need to discuss with the vendor when the device is purchased. The installation of antivirus software is a compulsory requirement of connecting to the school network solution.

Questions to consider and ask retailers when purchasing:

  1. Where do we send the device to be fixed?
  2. Where long will the device take to repair?
  3. What is covered and not covered by the warranty?
  4. Do you offer accidental damage cover?
    a. What are the terms?
    b. What is considered accidental?
    c. What is the excess if any?
    d. Is the device covered for loss and/or theft?

Insurance

Insurance for personal electronic devices is strongly recommended against accidental damage, loss and theft. Your options are to:

  • Include the iPad on your home and contents insurance
  • Contact an insurer that offers specific student cover products
  • Speak with the retailer you purchase the device from

The school takes no responsibility for damage and/or theft.

What processes are in place if my iPad is broken?

When the iPad was purchased information on warranty repairs should have been provided. If Accidental Damage cover/ Applecare was purchased the information should have been provided. Keeping the information in a known, safe place will make it easy to follow up should the iPad become faulty or need repair.

The Wynnum SHS BYOD program maintains a pool of iPads for students with broken or faulty personally owned devices.  Repair of faulty or damaged BYOD iPads is the responsibility of students/parents. A pool device will be provided to students upon proof of repair.
