Curriculum

A key provision of our curriculum organisation is the provision of a flexible structure that enables students to access multiple pathways that meet educational needs. 

In all year levels, there is a focus on cross-curricula priorities including literacy, numeracy, ICT integration, higher order thinking skills, information fluency, ethical researching, values education and student-teacher and peer relationships. 

Junior Secondary School

The Wynnum High curriculum is broad and varied with learning areas for our Junior Secondary students following the Australian Curriculum. Our school is alert to developments and timelines as Australia moves towards a national framework for schooling with the aim of raising education standards and achieving nationally consistent curriculum, assessment and reporting (http://www.acara.edu.au). 

Year 7 Curriculum

Students in Year 7 study the following core subjects each semester:

  • English
  • Core Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Humanities (Incorporating History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business)
  • Science
  • Japanese or French

In addition, Year 7 students study the following subjects for one semester:

  • An elective from The Arts (a choice of Art, Music, Dance or Drama)
  • An elective from Technology (a choice of Digital, Materials, Food or Textiles Technology)   

All students in Year 7 engage in a Pastoral Care period where the focus is on organisation, the development of resilience, emotional, physical, academic and social wellbeing.

Year 7 students have the opportunity to participate in a Gala Day sporting competition each term.

Year 8 Curriculum

Students in Year 8 study the following core subjects each semester:

  • English
  • Core Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Humanities (Incorporating History, Geography, Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business)
  • Science 
  • Japanese or French is an elective subject in Year 8.  Students who choose to study a language do so in place of an elective from The Arts or Technology. 

Year 8 students also study the following subjects for one semester:

  • An elective from The Arts (a choice of Art, Music, Dance or Drama)
  • An elective from Technology (a choice of Digital, Materials, Food or Textiles Technology)

All students in Year 8 engage in a Pastoral Care period where the focus is on organisation, the development of resilience, emotional, physical, academic and social wellbeing.

In Year 9, in addition to the core subjects, students will study an elective from The Arts, Technology or Business for both semesters.  If a student wishes to continue their study of French or Japanese, they do so in place of a Technology elective.

All students in Year 9 engage in a Pastoral Care period where the focus is on organisation, the development of resilience, emotional, physical, academic and social wellbeing.

Students in Year 9 participate in a weekly Sport afternoon where they have the opportunity to play interschool competition or recreational activities.  

Senior School

The Senior School provides opportunities for students to be explore options and make plans post high school.  There are many opportunities to link with industry and tertiary education organisations to extend their interest areas.

Year 10 Curriculum

Students in Year 10 begin the transition to the senior school.  They continue to have opportunities to specialise in areas of interest and success when developing their career pathway. 

In line with the Year 10 Guidelines, the course of study for Year 10 is designed to encourage our young people to consult with families and teachers to choose subjects that they enjoy and are able to achieve success in. A key component of Year 10 is the development of their Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan.

Year 10 students will study two semesters of English, Science and Mathematics. They will also study one semester each of History and Core Physical Education. Students will select four elective subjects from the learning areas of Health and Physical Education, Humanities, Business, The Arts, Technology, and Languages.

Students in Year 10 participate in a Pastoral Care lesson each week that is focussed on pathways, goal setting, academic organisation, emotional and social health and wellbeing.

Year 11 Curriculum

In Year 11 each student is required to study an English subject and at least one Mathematics subject over the two years.  An additional four subjects are selected from a wide range of General, Applied and VET certificates. Many opportunities exist for TAFE study, school based apprenticeships and traineeships.

Students in Year 11 participate in a Pastoral Care lesson each week that is focussed on pathways, goal setting, academic organisation, study skills, emotional and social health and wellbeing.

The school facilitates some subjects through the Brisbane School of Distance Education where necessary.

Year 12 Curriculum

In Year 12 each student is required to study an English subject and at least one Mathematics subject.  An additional four subjects are selected from a wide range of General, Applied and VET certificates. Many opportunities exist for TAFE study, school based apprenticeships and traineeships.

Students in Year 12 participate in a Pastoral Care lesson each week that is focussed on pathways, goal setting, academic organisation, study skills, emotional and social health and wellbeing and preparation for external examinations.

Students may choose alternative pathways as part of their SET Plan, e.g. the study of a university subject, a TAFE course or a school-based traineeship or apprenticeship.

The school facilitates some subjects through the Brisbane School of Distance Education where necessary.
