Students in Years 8 and 9 who currently own an iPad are able to continue to use this device during the transition period. However, if a new device is required, we would encourage the purchase of a laptop.
Laptop
Before acquiring a laptop for use at school the parent, caregiver and student should carefully read the minimum specifications (as set out below):
Windows: i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, battery life for school day;
Apple: MacBook Air 13-inch, Apple M1 Chip, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD

For convenience the school has linked with retailers as an option for parents purchasing a BYOD device. The use of the retailers is not mandatory but merely an option for parents. A potential advantage of using the retailers is the provision of cost-effective Accidental Damage Protection (ADP) insurance. The school recommends purchase of ADP, regardless of vendor chosen.

Technical support
Wynnum State High School runs an IT help desk that offers level one support for student owned devices. However, warranty, security, insurance and maintenance will be something the parent will need to discuss with the vendor when the device is purchased. The installation of antivirus software is a compulsory requirement of connecting to the school network solution.
Questions to consider and ask retailers when purchasing:
- Where do we send the device to be fixed?
- Where long will the device take to repair?
- What is covered and not covered by the warranty?
- Do you offer accidental damage cover?
a.
What are the terms?
b. What is considered accidental?
c. What is the excess if any?
d. Is the device covered for loss and/or theft?
Insurance
Insurance for personal electronic devices is strongly recommended against accidental damage, loss and theft. Your options are to:
- Include the laptop on your home and contents insurance
- Contact an insurer that offers specific student cover products
- Speak with the retailer you purchase the device from
The school takes no responsibility for damage and/or theft.
What processes are in place if my iPad or laptop is broken?
When the iPad/laptop was purchased information on warranty repairs should have been provided. If Accidental Damage cover/ Applecare was purchased the information should have been provided. Keeping the information in a known, safe place will make it easy to follow up should the iPad/laptop become faulty or need repair.
The Wynnum SHS BYOD program maintains a pool of laptops for students with broken or faulty personally owned devices. Repair of faulty or damaged BYOD iPads/laptops is the responsibility of students/parents. A pool device will be provided to students upon proof of repair.
