Inclusive Education

​​​The Special Education Program at Wynnum State High School supports students with a range of disabilities. These include:

• Intellectual Disability (ID): Intellectual Disability is characterised by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behaviour as expressed in conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills. (Queensland Government, 2011)
• Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): ASD is a complex development disability which includes difficulties in communication, social interaction and flexible thinking and behaviour.  In addition, individuals with an ASD may also have significant sensory processing difficulties.  The unusual perception of sounds, sights, smell, touch and taste can lead to distinctive behavioural responses. (Queensland Government, 2010) 
• Speech Language Impairment (SLI): Speech-language impairment is a Department of Education and Training category for identifying students requiring education adjustments as a result of having a severe ongoing primary spoken communication disorder. (Queensland Government, 2012)
• Hearing Impairment (HI): Hearing Impairment covers students with a high, mild, moderate, profound and severe loss as well as students with a unilateral hearing loss. (Queensland Government, 2010)
• Vision Impairment (VI): Vision Impairment is any diagnosed condition of the eye or visual system which results in reduced visual functioning for learning.  Disease, damage or injury causing a vision impairment can occur to any part of the system, i.e. the eye and the structures adjoining the eye, the visual pathway to the brain or visual centre of the brain. (Queensland Government, 2011)

Students are provided with in-class Teacher Aide (TA) support according to their needs.
