Debating has returned to Wynnum High after quite a few years and we are excited to have entered 4 teams from our school into the Queensland Debating Union Competition for 2023. Within a few weeks, Round 1 was upon us and our Year 10 team members Ella B, Ella F, Cara, Katie and Stevie were the first to participate in the competition. They were assigned the negative side of the topic That the senate should be selected by random lottery and despite having little over one week to prepare, they put forth some great arguments in their debate against Balmoral SHS.
Our Year 9 team were successful in winning their first debate arguing the affirmative side of the topic That we regret the prevalence of working from home against Anglican Church Grammar School. What a way to kick off the season!
Our Year 8 team competed against Cannon Hill Anglican College. They were assigned the affirmative side of the topic That we should only eat foods grown in Australia and we are so proud of how well they did in their first ever debate.
Our Year 7 team were the final team to compete in Round 1 of the competition. They were assigned the affirmative side of the topic That we should allow some native animals to be kept as pets and although they were defeated on the night, it was an extremely close competition as there was only 1 point between them and the opposing team from Cleveland SHS.
A huge thanks to Miss Warfield, Miss Bowman and Ms Wilson for volunteering to work with our teams this year. We really couldn’t participate without their hard work and commitment to their teams. I’m sure all of our teams will continue to do our school proud as they represent Wynnum High in Round 2 of the competition.
